(BUT EVERYBODY USES THEM)

 

dark green powder coated

every room a cage

open, linked with austere wireframe

 

stairwells, leap-frogging

floors one, three, five

narrowing into plywood panel walls

compressed in the high atrium

of empty repeating malls

 

only to dead ends, up or down

a gap - seems impossible to fit

wake before passage,

or somehow push through it..

 

almost disappointingly always a beach in autumn

chain-link fences, substations, bricks and cinder

flat, full-cover clouds, indistinct from grey water

 

I've used this shortcut

more times than I remember
