ON HAPPINESS

I find
that it keeps me from becoming entrenched
to move through fields
without leaving a visible trail
without creating an emplacement
from which to throw my stones

but then
so do my devils

moving at night
righting the long grass before it settles as trodden
and in the day
they burrow
and I can only tell when I step on soft ground
undermined and porous with tunnels

Just start building on that land
without laying foundations.
It won't support a home.
maybe a shed. or a greenhouse
or a bunker fortification...

no - keep moving.
don't stand still too long
move in the day
quietly, and alone
change your course when you see the pop of light
of sunlight blessing flowers,
and visit without having to take it away
then move on

each moment could be the last one you find

but move
with motion so smooth
and vision so soft
that you can see up close the field for miles
without attaching to any single plot

anyway.
